Never before had so many people access to the unix terminal than today. Every Apple Computer comes with OS X and therefor also with the Terminal application. The general perception is, that the Terminal is complicated and for geeks only. This is not true. Everybody who owns a Mac can use the Terminal. You don't have to, but you can.

While there is ample documentation about the unix shell, there are few documents that introduce a computer literate person to this side of their Mac. While some of this site also is true for other unix implementations it focuses on Mac OS X. Everything here works. Unix exists in many many flavors. Instead of trying to cover them all, we only care about OS X here.
